WOMEN’S DAY AT VIRTUOUS PIE

International Women’s Day is on March 8, 2021, and this year’s theme is Choose To Challenge. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day. We can choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity. We can choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.

To honour International Women’s Day at Virtuous Pie, we are donating a portion of our sales from the day to organizations making a positive impact in each of our communities:

DTES Women’s Centre

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is one of the busiest women’s centres in the country, operating a non-profit Drop-In Centre and 24-hour Emergency Night Shelter in one of the poorest communities in Canada. DEWC provides practical support to over 500 women, children and seniors, every day.

Founded in 1978, DEWC is one of the few safe spaces within the Downtown Eastside exclusively for self-identified women and their children – a group which is particularly vulnerable to exploitation, injustice and injury.

As well as providing a refuge and shelter from conditions of poverty and violence, the Centre provides basic necessities including hot meals, free clothing, clean, and secure toilets and showers, access to computers, and first aid.

DEWC’s advocacy programs assist women in developing stability and access the resources they need to improve health, family, employment and housing situations.

Victoria Women’s Transition House Society

Victoria Women’s Transition House Society (VWTH) provides emergency shelter, counselling and support services for women of all ages, with or without children, fleeing from intimate partner violence and abuse.

Their Emergency Shelter is a secure, purpose-built house located in a friendly Victoria neighbourhood in a confidential location. The Shelter provides safe accommodation, meals, hygiene supplies, childcare and support services for women and their children for up to 30 days.

VWTH also staffs a 24-hour Crisis & Information Line and offers a variety of counselling and support services for women, specialized programs for older women and for children who have witnessed domestic violence and abuse.

Women’s Foundation of Oregon

The Women’s Foundation of Oregon dismantles sexism, racism, and structural oppression through the movement of resources and ideas in our region. We work side-by-side with open-hearted leaders and communities toward real and lasting gender justice.
