Easy Vegan Hot Honey Recipe
Our popular house-made hot honey first debuted on the Sweet Pepper + Sausage pizza in 2018.
We dove into countless rounds of recipe testing before finally settling on a recipe with four primary ingredients: apple juice, brown rice syrup, chamomile tea, and chili flakes.
It’s since found its way onto two more of our bestselling pizzas: Sweet Mary Jane and Sgt. Pepperoni.
While we enjoy the way it complements the flavours and textures on our pizzas, this hot honey is also designed to seriously upgrade your salads, sandwiches, and stir-fries.
Chef’s Notes
- We use Calabrian chilis in oil as they provide a great flavour to the hot honey. You can make this recipe with red pepper flakes/chili flakes to achieve a similar result.
- The sweetness comes from reducing the apple juice. We would recommend an unfiltered apple juice to provide a better flavour.
- Brown rice syrup will help thicken the mixture and create that honey-like consistency.
- Chamomile tea is a great complement to provide additional flavour.
Easy Vegan Hot Honey Recipe
Ingredients
- 1L unfiltered apple juice
- 4 bags or 16 g chamomile tea
- 1 cup brown rice syrup
- 1 cup calabrian chilis in oil OR chili flakes
Instructions
On an induction burner, set it to 250-300°C
On a gas stove, set it to medium-high heat
- Combine all ingredients in an appropriately sized pot
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it reduce until the mixture can almost coat the back of a spoon. This should take approximately 1 hour
- Strain out solids
- Allow the filtered mixture to cool
- The final product should have a honey-like consistency
- Place into an appropriately sized container and refrigerate for up to 7 days
